If you’re out in a world that can hurt you as you quest through Hytale in search of gradual progression, you’ll all but need to have a stock of food on you, since you’re risking a lot every time your avatar dies and loses some of their loot!
The easiest way to ensure you’ve got food in Hytale is by creating a farm near your base. Here, you’ll be able to grow all kinds of crops to keep yourself sustained across your adventures for days to come. Here’s a look at what you need to know about farming in Hytale.
Farming Overview

Your first foray into farming in Hytale will probably be as simple as you picking up berries or mushrooms that litter the ground outside of your spawn, but if you’re looking to establish a steady supply of more varied foods in the game, you’ll need to work out a farming system for yourself as soon as you’re able.
To get started, you’ll need to craft a Farmer’s Workbench by using any standard Workbench, either one you found or one you created and placed someplace around your home base. Here, you’ll have access to a variety of tools, seeds, saplings, planters, and more. Craft the seeds you’d like to plant from in this menu, clear spots with tools you made here, and process your crops into other items here as well.
If you’re looking to plant in the dirt, you’ll simply need to craft a Hoe of either stone, Copper, or Iron, and use it to till the ground where you’d like your new plants to be. If you’d rather use planters, you can craft Planter items and place your seeds in there instead. Planters will unlock as you upgrade the tier of the Farmer’s Workbench to unlock new recipes, so keep upgrading as much as possible as you progress through the game.
Every planted seed will need to be watered somehow – whether that’s you using a watering can or when it rains – and they’ll grow in as harvestable crops after a few days. You’ll need to walk up and either chop down or interact with the plant to harvest it, and you can then either eat the crop raw, use it to help you make on of several cooked meals at the Chef’s Stove, or even use them to produce extra Essence of Life from a conversion tab if you find yourself short on it as you venture through the open world.
TIP: You’ll unlock access to new seed types not only as you upgrade the tier of your Farmer’s Workbench, but as you recover memories through the storyline in the Forgotten Temple. This can be done in Exploration Mode by slowly but surely unfurling what exists of the game’s story in early access.
Plenty of farming recipes will unlock other farming recipes as you keep leveling up, with Essence of Life always at the heart of your farming operations in Hytale. Pair growing crops with the limited taming of animals we’ve got in early access, and you’ll be in good shape in no time!
All Farmer’s Workbench Recipes

The Farmer’s Workbench is broken into six categories – Farming, Seeds, Sapplings, Essence of Life, Planters, and Decorative – that each have their own lengthy crafting menus within, all related to crops and plants. You’ll need to make one before you can farm!
